OUR STORY
Ward Demolition was founded in 1987 by Peter Ward. Fresh from the farm, with a land cruiser utility and tandem trailer, he was keen to try something new. He started off doing small jobs and helping bigger civil contractors, as Ward didn’t yet have machinery of their own. As things grew he purchased a six-wheeler truck and bobcat with a breaker attached. Later came a 12 tonne digger, with a breaker more valuable than the machine itself. Staff still fondly recall it. “We took the whole package and worked the machine 20 hours a day. It paid for itself seven or eight times over.”
Ward Demolition now operates a huge fleet of machinery. We have 50 excavators ranging in size from one tonne to 70 tonne, including high reach, super high reach, skid steer loaders and wheel loaders. Our haulage fleet consists of 20 truck and trailers, hook bins and articulated barrel bins, ranging in size from four wheelers to eight wheelers. All vehicles are equipped with GPS systems. We have two transporter trucks that move our plant to various sites, as well as four crushing and screening plants.
We now employ over 100 people, working across the full spectrum of residential, commercial and industrial demolition, including machinery hire, resource recovery, recycling and salvage.
OUR PEOPLE
“Collaboration and teamwork are the foundation of our business.” Peter Ward
At the heart of our organisation is a very capable and skilled group of individuals, with a genuine enthusiasm for what we do. It’s their tenacity and determination to do a good job that ensures the success of our client’s projects. We’ve always taken pride in the integrity and honesty of our people, and our ability to deliver results.
LEADING THE WAY
One way we stay ahead of the industry is by sourcing world leading Innovations that save time and money, reduce our impact on the environment and above all else, keep our team safe. Our NZ first DXR 300 and DMR 140 robotic machines tick all the boxes. These small but mighty machines allow our team to operate in tight / dangerous spaces, while maintaining a safe distance. Their compact size allows us to place them in areas inaccessible to machines. This enables us to complete tasks that previously took weeks via manual labour, in mere hours by Robotic machine. This in turn reduces fuel consumption as the generator used to power the Robot is the same used to run the Hilti hand breakers so when the task is completed significantly faster this reduces the generators run time and fuel intake. It essentially eliminates the requirement for hands-on, labour work. Meaning less money spent on labour costs and less people are required to drive to work further minimising fuel consumption.
Another important Innovation is our High pressure Dust suppression system attachment on our machines. The most advanced technology on the market for saving the environment from dust emissions. This high level dust management makes the air significantly clearer resulting in better visibility and safer breathing.
How does this work? Our excavator is fitted with a high pressure water pump which is powered by the machine’s hydraulics. The operator switches on the device before connecting with the structure. High-pressure water fog is sprayed directly to the impact zone through special nozzles fitted to the attachment. The high pressure atomizes the water to microscopic water droplets. Once these water droplets bind with dust particles the weight increases dramatically causing it to fall to the ground faster, meaning the dust is contained at the site of the work and is not airborne for long. The size of this dust bound water drop is so tiny that the ground doesn’t become wet enough to cause silt run off. When the operator has completed their task they can turn the system off immediately, saving water and reducing the impact on the environment.
Keeping ahead in the industry means participating in national and international events. Peter Ward attends the NZIQA Quarry Conference, the American Demolition Conference and a variety of waste minimisation conferences around the globe.
An eminent demolition expert, Peter’s valuable knowledge and insights are influential in the industry. He has spoken for a variety of organisations, engineering firms, and industry associations.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Effective project management is essential to deliver an integrated and efficient service for our clients. Whether it’s a residential or industrial project, tactical coordination of resources ensures seamless and timely delivery.
A mix of qualifications and hands-on experience gives Ward project managers a competitive edge. Insight generated from a thorough understanding of the demolition and construction process allows us to provide accurate costs, without unnecessary add-ons.

SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
We believe demolition is the first step in sustainable building – avant-garde thinking in an industry historically known for creating waste. Ward Demolition is actively working on ways of reducing its environmental impact. Intelligent logistics planning – ensuring trucks are always travelling full – is just one example of how we are working smarter.
Taking a wider industry view, construction companies are beginning to incorporate Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles into their working models. For decades we have been industry leaders in sustainability.

RECYCLING
Since inception, Ward Demolition has constantly sought new ways to utilise waste materials. The ‘reduce, re-use and recycle’ philosophy permeates our thinking and is a driving philosophy behind our business processes.
Ward Demolition has the ability to process waste material both on and off-site. Some of our projects have reached recycling targets of up to 98% of salvaged material by weight. (Imperial Tobacco) We do this by integrating the capabilities of our many specialist units.
